When life gives you lemons make lemonade – or you could clean your home with these handy hacks.
How to steam clean a microwave
Put a sliced lemon in a microwave-safe bowl and half fill with water. Microwave for 4 minutes and leave the door closed for 5 minutes after. The steam will loosen any food splatters so they can be easily wiped away with a cloth, and neutralise bad smells.

How to banish fridge odours
Soak a sponge in lemon juice, put it on a saucer and leave in the fridge. By the morning your fridge will smell zesty fresh again.
Clean mirrors and windows
Mix 1 tbsp white vinegar with 2 tbsp lemon juice. Pour 1 cup of hot (not boiling) water into the mixture, stir ingredients and pour into a spray bottle.
Remove grime from grouting
Rub with lemon juice and leave for 10 minutes before scrubbing with an old toothbrush.

Mix 1 tbsp lemon juice with 2 tbsp salt, to form a paste. Rub the paste onto the rusty area and scrub with an old toothbrush, before rinsing with water.
How to clean a dishwasher
Put lemon juice into a mug (or another dishwasher-safe container), pop it on the bottom rack, and set it to a rinse cycle and your dishwasher will be clean and smell of lemons.
Use lemons as a scouring pad
Slice a lemon in half and sprinkle the cut side with a generous amount of salt, then use the lemon half like a scourer to polish pots and pans.
This hack also works wonders on stained chopping boards. Sprinkle a chopping board with coarse salt, then squeeze lemon juice onto the board, leave for a few minutes and then scrub with half a lemon.

Put a few used lemon halves into the kettle, fill with water and boil. Leave overnight, and boil again in the morning before emptying. Give it a quick rinse to remove any debris and it’s ready for your morning cuppa.
Spring clean your blender
Leave your blender sparkling clean by whizzing a chopped up lemon with a splash of washing up liquid and water. It will look as good as new in seconds.
